This first-ever beaming of a recorded song by NASA will take place on February 4, 2008 when the Beatle’s song ‘Across the Universe’ is sent to the North Star. This event celebrates the 40th anniversary of the song, the 45th anniversary of NASA’s Deep Space Network, which communicates with its distant probes, and the 50th anniversary of NASA. ‘Send my love to the aliens,’ Paul McCartney told NASA through a Beatles historian. ‘All the best, Paul.’

Such an event naturally takes us back to other record related milestones, like the small group gathered around the tinfoil phonograph in December 1877 listening to ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ or Edison Day, October 21, 1915, celebrated at the San Francisco Pan-American Exposition, when a recording of Anna Case of the Metropolitan was relayed by telephone to San Francisco, and so was the voice of Miss Case singing the same aria, live, in West Orange, NJ. The ‘real voice’ was claimed to be indistinguishable from the recorded voice.’ Recorded music transmitted by telephone, by NASA, by tinfoil…it’s all part of the continuum.

As we celebrate this event on February 4, as keepers of the phonograph legacy let’s all take a moment to reflect on this occasion as part of that continuum…recording technologies change, new audiences listen, but in the end we will continue to ‘Remember the Phonograph’ as Prometheus’s gift of fire to mankind…the revolution continues.
